What are the major problems faced by Africa today?

Thursday, December 25, 2008

Today, the African nations are no longer colonies, but are independent countries that play an important role in world affairs. However, they still face some serious problems. Severe droughts occur frequently, bringing food shortage, starvation and death. It is also a fact that Africa has only a few industries, and so, its nations depend mainly on agriculture. Most countries produce only one or two products. They have to depend on industrial nations for their needs, and have to pay heavily for all the goods that they buy. So, poverty is still widespread.

There are frequent wars in Africa over the national boundaries, which hinder progress. There were also problems In South Africa, where the blacks were treated as second class citizens and not allowed to vote. This caused widespread anger, and led to many riots and unrest. In spite of all these challenges, Africans are steadily improving their standard of living through better education and health care, and developing their mineral wealth to increase prosperity. Africa is truly on the road to progress, and to a bright and prosperous future.
