When did the European invasion of Africa begin?

Wednesday, December 24, 2008

The European invasion began as a peaceful trade, but Westerners became quite willing to resort to war in order to force African nations to open their doors for them. During the late 1700s, Europeans began to explore the interiors of Africa to develop new trade ties and also to spread Christianity. By the 1800s, France had gained control of Algeria and Britain won Egypt. The Dutch too, moved out of their settlement at Cape Town, and conquered the local African nations. Gradually other nations like Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain invaded Africa, and by the early 20th century, most of the continent was divided amongst the European nations.
