Who were the earliest inhabitants of America?

You must have heard a lot about Red Indians. You might even have seen pictures of them. Well, they were the first inhabitants of America, and to-day, they are called American Indians or Native Americans. They came to America more than 20,000 years ago, following herds of large mammals, which they hunted for food. They settled mostly in the middle of America. In the Icy northern regions, the Eskimos were the first inhabitants. They came from Asia to America several thousands of years ago. The Europeans came only much, much later, in the early 15^th and 16^th centuries. The Spanish came first, followed by the British and the French. It was the Europeans who brought slaves from Africa to work in America, and their descendants, the African Americans, form a good part of the population of America today.
